Welcome!

Lilly Conferences have provided opportunities for the presentation of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for over 25 years. Participants come from a multitude of disciplines and from throughout the US.

The 8th Annual Lilly Teaching and Learning Conference in Traverse City, Michigan will be held Thursday, September 18 – Sunday, September 21, 2008 at the Park Place Hotel in beautiful downtown Traverse City.

The conference theme this year is Millennial Learning: Teaching in the 21st Century. Just 20 years ago individuals started to purchase desktop computers, and the internet was not yet used by the public. Now, in the form of PDAs, individuals not only carry computers in the palm of their hands, they have ready access to computers being held by everyone else. Teaching at a time when students and faculty have almost limitless information available at any time creates both opportunities and challenges.

Within the overall conference theme of the Millennial Learning, we are supporting four major themes to focus our discussions: Active Learning, Teaching Well with Technology, Developing Cultural Competency, and Sustainability.

Active Learning:   Finding ways to promote learning in which students are actively involved with the course material.

Teaching Well With Technology:   Promoting integration of technology into the learning experience in a way that actually benefits the student and assists with the long-term retention of information.

Developing Cultural Competency:   We all now live in a global environment, and at this time it is imperative that we learn to identify and understand cultural perspectives other than our own.

Sustainability:   Global climate change and sustainability issues will no doubt dominate the landscape in the coming years. This track is devoted to our roles and responsibilities in higher education with respect to sustainability.
