Dr.
Daniel Steele is an associate professor
in the School of Music. He
came to CMU in the Fall of 1989
and is being recognized for his
love of both teaching and music,
and the way in which he creates
intellectually stimulating classroom
experiences for his students.
Dr.
Steele holds a Bachelor of Music
Education from Wheaton College,
a Master of Music Education from
the University of Kansas, and a
Doctorate of Music Education from
the University of Cincinnati.
Students’ comments
included that Dr. Steele “… loves
what he is doing and his attitude
is infectious,” and that
Dr. Steele “… has
a tremendous legacy that we should
all aspire to.” In support
of his nomination, another student
noted that “ He was always
interested in each of us becoming
not only more competent and informed – but
to also become increasingly zealous
and aware of the need to also be
creative and relevant.”
Peers
reflected that Dr. Steele’s “…most
distinguishing professional and
personal characteristic is his
positive and enthusiastic approach
to every endeavor.” This
same individual also noted that
Dr. Steele is “…an
excellent role model not only for
his students, but his colleagues,
as well.” In
a letter of support for this award,
another colleague wrote that Dr.
Steele “…has tremendous
respect for his students. He
makes time for them even though
he’s very busy.”
A
student finalized her letter by
saying, “I look forward
to continuing my professional relationship
with Dr. Steele and following his
positive sense of learning as my
career develops. It is because
of his guidance that I am able
to have a sense of professional
accomplishment and growth.”
In addition
to exceptional teaching, Dr. Steele
is active in the areas of creativity
and scholarly activity in music education
and appreciation. He
has also engaged in extensive service
to the university over the past 19
years. |

Dr. N. Joan Hornak is
a professor in the Department of
Counseling and Special Education,
and has taught at CMU since 1977.
Dr. Hornak is being recognized
for her respect for students, her
integrity, her professionalism,
and a vast knowledge of her field,
all of which she effectively brings
into the classroom.
Dr. Hornak holds a Bachelor
of Arts Degree and a Master of
Arts Degree from Central Michigan
University, and an Ed.D. from the
University of Northern Colorado.One
former student wrote that Dr. Hornak, “…serves
as a beacon for students, faculty,
and alumni aspiring to achieve
their own professional and personal
excellence.” A second student
commented: “I cannot
say enough about Dr. Hornak’s
ability to model an authentic,
friendly professionalism and a
positive attitude for students
and the greater community in general.” A
colleague commented that Dr. Hornak “…is masterful
both as an instructor and a practitioner
and has a reputation amongst students
and the community as a person of
excellent character and dedication
to assisting others.” Another
colleague added that “…she
is definitely the role model I
would want for my students!”This campus-wide
teaching award is given following
an extensive review of materials
by a committee of colleagues and
students. The nominees each year
are all exceptional faculty members,
and to win is no small accomplishment. Dr.
N. Joan Hornak has now received
this prestigious teaching award
three times: 1990, 2000, and 2008.
In addition to exceptional teaching,
Dr. Hornak has published consistently
in referred journals, presented
at many conferences, and provided
extensive university service. She
has been a well-respected faculty member
at CMU for over 30 years, and continues
to have a passion for learning and
for helping others to learn. |
Mr.
John Nichol is a professor in the
School of Music who came to CMU
in 1980. Mr. Nichol
personifies respect and is an exceptional
role model for his students. He
possesses profound knowledge and
performance ability in his field,
and demands outstanding performance
in his students.
Mr. Nichol earned his Bachelor
of Music from Central Michigan
University and his Masters in Music
from Michigan State University.
In writing
a letter of support for this
award, a former student commented
that Mr. Nichol “…is
an inspirational motivator who
challenges his students to become ‘inquisitive
researchers’ and instills
a ‘thirst of knowledge’ in
his students to become lifelong
learners.” This
student went on to write, “He
treats everyone he meets with the
utmost respect and deeply cares
about the successes of each of
his students.” Another
student stated, “There is
no way I would be where I am today
without his guidance and support.” A
final student wrote, “He
has inspired countless students
to be leaders in their professions
and to make advancements to their
field throughout their careers.”
Colleagues
who wrote to support his nomination
for this teaching award commented
that Mr. Nichol “…is
absolutely passionate about teaching
and treats every student like he
would a family member. He
sets the bar and expectations very
high for each student and yet nurtures
them with the utmost care.” Another
colleague wrote, “John Nichol
is without doubt the finest teacher
I have ever known. He is
an outstanding role model, excellent
motivator, and tireless worker.”
In addition
to the CMU Excellence in Teaching
Award, Mr. Nichol is also the
recipient of the 2008 Lorrie
Ryan Memorial Excellence in Teaching
Award. This
award is given to one CMU faculty
member each year who inspires students
through an exemplary commitment
to community service and demonstrates
a profound respect for others. |

Dr.
Pamela Eddy is an associate professor
in the Department of Educational
Leadership. She
has been at CMU since 2002 and
is honored for her high level of
enthusiasm for all aspects of learning,
for setting high expectations for
her students, for creating innovative
learning opportunities, and for
providing the instruction necessary
for success.
Dr. Eddy received her Bachelor
of Science from Allegheny College,
a Master of Science from Cornell
University, and a Ph.D. from Michigan
State University.
In support for
this award, a former student wrote, “One
of the best parts of participating
in her class is watching an instructor
who not only teaches, but who immerses
herself in the class, ensuring
that all students get the most
that they can out of each learning
experience.” Another
student shared that “The
breadth and depth of her knowledge
base is absolutely incredible.”
A colleague noted
that Dr. Eddy “…is
one of those faculty who students
remember throughout the remainder
of their careers as a person who
really made a difference in their
lives.” This colleague
also wrote that Dr. Eddy “…is
an extremely enthusiastic instructor
whose passion for teaching and
learning brings out the best in
her students.”
In addition to
exceptional teaching in 16 different
courses in the past 5 years at
CMU, Dr. Eddy is a prolific scholar.
Last year she received the 2007
Provost Award for Research and
Creative Activity, and this coming
year has been awarded a Fulbright
Scholarship for Research in Dublin,
Ireland. Dr.
Eddy also provides exceptional
service to the university, including
serving as the chair of 10 different
dissertation committees this past
year alone. |
Dr.
Andrew Scott McNaught is an associate
professor in the Department of
Biology. He joined CMU in 1996. Dr.
McNaught is exceptionally engaging
and known for his ability to make
challenging and complex material
accessible.
Dr. McNaught earned his Bachelor
of Arts from Lawrence University
and a Ph.D. from the University
of Michigan.
In writing a
recommendation for this award,
a former student commented, “He has a true
love for what he teaches and is
genuinely excited to share this
knowledge with his students.” Another
student commented, “His progressive
teaching style has provided the
intellectual mortar by which difficult
concepts have been cemented together
to provide a solid foundation for
continued learning.” Yet
another student added, “ Any
time I have given a lecture, talked
with a group of people, or given
a presentation I attempt to be
as inventive, prepared, and enthusiastic
about the material [as Dr. McNaught].”
A colleague noted
that Dr. McNaught is “… known for extraordinary
performance in classroom teaching.
Students gravitate to him with
concerns and problems because as
he respects them, they respect
him.” Another peer noted
that he is “… not
only a skillful, engaging, enthusiastic
teacher, but a highly recognized
scholar who is professionally engaged
in the community.” And a
third peer wrote that “…he
becomes so enthralled and excited
as he teaches, that the class ‘catches’ this
enthusiasm and this carries all
of them to a new level. Then
learning comes easy!”
Dr. McNaught’s teaching
includes regularly supervising
theses and internships, as well
as involving undergraduates in
research projects. In addition
to a steady line of research, Dr.
McNaught has received approximately
one million dollars in grants and
contracts, and has provided extensive
community and university service
over the past ten years. |
