Excellence in Teaching

Central Michigan University has a long and proud tradition of excellence in teaching. The faculty of Central Michigan University have maintained this tradition by setting high standards in demanding competence of all its members.

At the same time, however, there are occasions when faculty members exceed the usual standards and expectations. The Academic Senate believes that such occasions and such individuals should receive special recognition and is therefore establishing the Excellence in Teaching Award.

  1. An Excellence in Teaching Award Committee will administer the combined CMU and State-sponsored teaching excellence award program.

  2. Procedures, letters, and recommendation forms described in this report should be used by the Excellence in Teaching Award Committee.

  3. Past awardees should be considered as recipients of this award and be recognized as recommended, less the monetary recommendation.

  4. Membership of the Excellence in Teaching Award Committee will consist of ten faculty (1 from each college: 1 from BA, 1 from C&FA, 1 from EHS, 1 from HP, 1 from H&S&BS, 1 from S&T, and 4 at large) and five students elected by the Academic Senate. Students should be selected to assure diversity in regard to class, field of study, gender, and racial background. Faculty should be selected to assure diversity in regard to rank, gender, and racial background.

  5. Up to five (5) faculty will receive the award. The awards will be presented at the spring commencement.

  6. Each recipient will receive an engraved clock to be presented at the May commencement ceremonies.

  7. Each awardee will be recognized in CentraLine with a picture and a brief description and have his/her name on a plaque in the library which will be changed each year.

  8. All tenure track faculty (and temporary faculty beyond their first year of service who teach a minimum of two-thirds or more) would be eligible for selection.

  9. A recipient will not be eligible to receive another award until seven years have elapsed.

  10. All recommendation forms will be considered confidential.

  11. After the first three years, and then subsequently every five years, the Excellence in Teaching Award Committee will present a review of the committee’s actions to the Academic Senate and will recommend any changes in procedures, number of awards, or award amounts. The Academic Senate will act on this review and consider if the awards merit continuation, and if continuation is accepted, whether modifications of the award are necessary.
